A kernel dump file is not analyzable on a computer that is running an x86-based edition of Windows Server 2008 or a 32-bit version of Windows Vista Service Pack 1

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running an x86-based edition of Windows Server 2008 or a 32-bit version of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).
  • The computer is configured to generate a kernel memory dump.
  • The computer is in Physical Address Extension (PAE) mode.
  • You set the increaseuserva parameter to any value to specify the amount of user-mode virtual address space on the computer.
  • Non-Maskable Interrupt (NMI) occurrs when the computer is under high stress.
In this scenario, the generated kernel dump file is not analyzable through debuggers. If you check the dump file by using the Dumpchk.exe tool, the tool reports that the file cannot read, and a "0x80004002" error is returned.

Cause

This problem occurs because the system does not include system page directory information in the dump file under a specific condition that is described in "Symptoms" section.

Resolution

The following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

Update for Windows Server 2008 and for 32-bit versions of Windows Vista Service Pack 1
Download the Update for Windows Server 2008 package now.
Note The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language. In this case, you cannot see the hotfix for Windows Viata Service Pack 1 on the hotfix download site. When this occurs, apply the Windows Server 2008 hotfix to the Windows Vista Service Pack 1-based computer to resolve the issue.
