FIX: Error message when you insert data to a table that contains two image columns by using the SQL Server ODBC driver: "[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Invalid locator de-referenced"

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You create a table that contains two image columns in a database of Microsoft SQL Server. On a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, you insert data in the image columns by using the SQL Server ODBC driver that is included in the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC). When you call the SQLParamData function to specify a parameter for the insert operation at execution time, you receive the following error message:
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Invalid locator de-referenced.
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The data that you insert in the first image column is smaller than or equal to 400 kilobytes (KB).
  • The data that you insert in the second image column is larger than 400 KB.
