2007 Office file associations are removed when you remove the 2007 Office Compatibility Pack or when you remove 2007 Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 1

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You upgrade to 2007 Microsoft Office from an Office legacy version.
  • You remove the 2007 Office Compatibility Pack, or you remove the 2007 Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 1 (SP1).
In this scenario, 2007 Office file associations are also removed. For example, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PowerPoint.Show.12\shell\Open\command registry subkey that points to PowerPoint.exe is removed when the 2007 Office Compatibility Pack is removed or when 2007 Office Compatibility Pack SP1 is removed.
