Windows Mobile Device Center requires the Desktop Experience on Windows 2008

Symptoms

To enable Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) on Windows Server 2008 R2, you'll need to install the Desktop Experience feature and then install Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center. If you try to install WMDC before you enable the Desktop Experience feature, you will receive the following error message:
The update could not be installed because at least one Windows component required by Windows Mobile Device Center is missing

Cause

This error happens if the Desktop Experience feature is not installed. In Windows Server 2008, the Desktop Experience feature must be installed before you can install Windows Mobile Device Center.

Note You cannot install Microsoft ActiveSync on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.
  2. In the console tree, click Features, and then click Add Features.
  3. In the details pane, click to select the Desktop Experience check box.
  4. Click Next, and then click Install.
You can now successfully install Windows Mobile Device Center.
