When you work in a WYSIWYG HTML-editing environment, Internet Explorer 6 may crash because of an access violation in the Mshtml.dll module

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are running a Windows XP-based computer that has Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 installed.
  • In Internet Explorer, you visit a Web page that contains a "what you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) HTML-editing environment.
In this scenario, Internet Explorer may crash because of an access violation.

When the issue occurs, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you click click here to see the detail information, you see the following error signature:
    AppName: iexplore.exe
    AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
    ModName: mshtml.dll
    ModVer: 6.0.2900.3199
    Offset: 0006963f
Additionally, an event that resembles the following is logged in Application log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Date: Date
Time: Time
User: N/A
Computer: Description:
Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module mshtml.dll, version 6.0.2900.3199, fault address 0x0006963f.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, install the hotfix files in the most current cumulative security update for Internet Explorer.   1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  4. Type FEATURE_CLONENODE_ATTRIBUTES_KB949922 to name the new registry subkey, and then press ENTER.
  5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type iexplore.exe to name the new registry entry, and then press ENTER.
  7. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  8. Type 1, and then click OK.
  9. Exit Registry Editor.
