Error message when you try to delete a folder after an SMB share has been removed on a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2008: "The action can't be completed because the folder is open in another program"

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • On a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008, you create a Server Message Block (SMB) share.
  • After the share is not accessed for some time, you remove the share.
In this scenario, you cannot delete the folder that is used to back the share. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Folder In Use
The action can't be completed because the folder is open in another program
Close the folder and try again.
In this case, you have to restart the computer. After that, you can delete the folder.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a handle leak. When the share is removed, the handle to the folder that backs the share may not be closed. Therefore, the issue occurs.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
