Symptoms

When you use the Exmerge tool to try to export the contents of a mailbox in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 environment, you receive the following error message:

Cause

This problem occurs if there are more than 16,383 items in the source mailbox from which you are trying to export items.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Export fewer than 16,383 items based on the received date of the messages.
  • Use Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 or Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 to manually export the items.

More information

The Exmerge tool does not support Unicode personal folder (.pst) files. Additionally, the tool does not support large tables in ANSI .pst file formats. The Exmerge tool is written based on the original ANSI .pst file format. The original limitation of ANSI .pst files without large table support is 16,383 items and a 2-gigabyte (GB) maximum file size.
