Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You have a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. Microsoft Commerce Server 2007 is installed on the computer. In this scenario, you may receive the following error message:
Windows could not start the Commerce Server Direct Mailer service on Local Computer.
Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.

Cause

This problem occurs because the Commerce Server 2007 installer adds a dependency for the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service in the DependOnService registry value. You receive the error message because the Commerce Server 2007 Direct Mailer service (DMLService) depends on a service that does not exist in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008.

Resolution

Workaround

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To work around this problem, remove the WMI entry from the DependOnService registry value. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start
    , type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.
  2. Locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DMLService
  3. In the right pane, right-click DependOnService, and then click Modify.
  4. In the Value data box, delete WMI, and then click OK.
  5. On the File menu, click Exit.
