When Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) tries to delete hardware support snapshots on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or an x64 version of Windows XP, the operation may fail

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 or an x64 version of Windows XP.
  • You apply hotfix 940349 or hotfix 939989 on this computer.
  • Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) tries to delete hardware support snapshots.
In this scenario, the snapshot-deletion operation may fail. Additionally, the following event is logged in the System log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: VSS
Event Category: None
Event ID: 12289

Description: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error IOCTL_STORAGE_QUERY_PROPERTY(<device name>, StorageDeviceProperty) - BuildLunInfoForDrive. hr = 0x80070037

This problem may occur because VSS incorrectly hides hardware support snapshots.
