Windows Vista-specific folder redirection policies are removed from a GPO when you connect to an AGPM server component that is installed on a Windows Server 2003-based member server

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are using a Windows Vista-based computer that is part of a domain.
  • You install the Advanced Group Policy Management (AGPM) client component on this computer, and then you connect to the AGPM server component that is installed on a Windows Server 2003-based member server in the same domain.
  • You import a Group Policy object (GPO) that contains a Windows Vista-specific folder redirection policy to the Change Control node of the AGPM tool in the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) interface. Or, you create a new GPO that has a Windows Vista-specific folder redirection policy.
  • You view the GPO settings report on the Settings tab of the GPO.
In this scenario, the GPO settings report displays error messages that resemble the following under the "Folder Redirection" section of the report:
Change Control:
An error has occurred while collecting data for <GPO>
The following errors were encountered: The file "\\root-dc1\sysvol\contoso.com\Policies\{3BAB9C72-9B36-46A1-A866-744FDDAF0AF7}\User\Documents & Settings\fdeploy.ini" is not in a valid format.
Details: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

GPMC:
An error has occurred while collecting data for Folder Redirection.
The following errors were encountered: An unknown error occurred while data was gathered for this extension.
Details: FRSettingRead failed with -2147020590
Additionally, if you use the Change Control node of the AGPM tool to deploy the GPO, the folder redirection policy will be removed from the GPO.

Cause

This issue occurs because the AGPM server component is installed on the Windows Server 2003-based computer. The Windows Server 2003-based version of the GPMC is not aware of the Windows Vista policies. Therefore, the Change Control node of the AGPM tool in GPMC does not store the following policy settings:
  • Windows Vista-specific folder redirection items
  • Wireless Network 802.11
  • Wireless Network 802.3
  • Deployed Printers

Workaround

To work around this issue, install the AGPM server component on a Windows Vista-based computer, and then configure the component to function as an AGPM server.

Note This issue is resolved in Windows Server 2008.
