You cannot install device drivers in a Windows Server 2008 cluster environment if the drivers contain LZ-compressed files

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You try to install a device driver in a Windows Server 2008 cluster environment.
  • The device driver contains Lempel-Ziv (LZ)-compressed files, such as .dl_ files.
In this scenario, the driver installation process may prompt you for the location of a .dl_ file. However, even after you manually select the correct location, you are still prompted for the file's location.

Additionally, the following error may be logged in the Setupapi.app.log file:
!!!  cpy: Unable to decompress-or-copy file
!!!  cpy: Error installing file (0x0000001e)
!!!  cpy: Error 30: The system cannot read from the specified device.
!    cpy:      SourceFile   - source file path
!    cpy:      TempFile     - temporary file path
!    cpy:      TargetFile   - target file path
!!!  flq: SPFILENOTIFY_COPYERROR: Source = source file path, Target = target file path, Flags = 0x00000400, Error = 0x0000001e.

Cause

This issue occurs when the length of the file path is longer than 128 characters in a Windows Server 2008 cluster environment. The "file copy" function in the Setupapi.dll module restricts the maximum path length to 128 characters.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
