You cannot use the Reg.exe utility to access 64-bit registry keys on a 64-bit computer from a computer that is running a 32-bit version of Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Vista

On a computer that is running a 32-bit version of Windows Server 2003, the Reg.exe utility cannot access 64-bit registry keys on a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2003.

Notes

• This problem occurs when the 32-bit computer has Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed.
• This problem does not occur on a computer that is running Windows 2000.
• This problem also occurs on a computer that is running Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008.

This problem occurs because of the registry redirector feature and because of the registry reflection feature. These features were introduced in Windows Server 2003 SP1.

A hotfix is available to resolve this problem. After you apply this hotfix, a new /reg switch is added to the Reg.exe utility. This switch enables the utility to remotely access a 64-bit registry from a 32-bit version of Windows Server 2003. The following is a sample command line:Note The 64server placeholder represents the computer name of the remote 64-bit computer.

The /reg:64 switch enables the source computer to receive the 64-bit view of the remote registry. Similarly, the /reg:32 switch enables the source computer to receive the 32-bit view of the remote registry.

If you do not specify the /reg switch, the source computer receives a view of the remote registry that matches the client computer platform. Therefore, the 32-bit source computer receives a 32-bit view of the remote registry.

To work around the problem, run the Reg.exe utility on a Windows 2000-based computer or on a computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2003.

32-bit applications can receive only a 32-bit view of the remote registry unless these applications use the KEY_WOW64_64KEY flag in a post-Windows Server 2003 SP1 environment.
