On a Windows Server 2003-based computer that has a TCP Chimney Offload network adapter, the TCP data stream may be corrupted when the network adapter indicates an MDL chain whose starting MDL has a nonzero offset

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • A Network Device Interface Specification (NDIS) driver is installed for a network adapter on a Windows Server 2003-based computer.
  • The NDIS driver supports TCP Chimney Offload.
  • An application calls the CreateFile function, the ReadFile function, or the WriteFile function to access files on a network drive through the network adapter.
  • The network adapter indicates a memory descriptor list (MDL) chain, and the offset to the starting MDL is nonzero.
In this scenario, the TCP data stream may be corrupted, and a read access violation may occur. Therefore, the application may stop responding or stop unexpectedly.

Cause

When the TCP/IP driver maps the offload network adapter's indication to a Transport Data Interface (TDI) receive indication, the TCP/IP driver incorrectly calculates the receive buffer length. Therefore, the TDI client tries to access data beyond the end of the buffer.
