Symptoms

When a user tries to connect to a shared printer in Windows Server 2008, the user receives an error message. The two scenarios in which a user experiences this problem are as follows:
  • When the user tries to connect to a shared printer that is hosted on a Linux-based computer, the user receives the following error message:
Printer Driver setup error. Access is denied.

Note The masquerading printer connection feature in Windows Server 2008 enables shared printer connections from Windows-based computers to printers that are hosted on Linux-based computers.
  • When the user uses HTTP to try to connect to a printer that is connected to a Windows-based computer, the user receives the following error message:
Windows cannot connect to the printer. Access is denied.

Cause

This issue occurs if the user does not have administrative user rights or elevated user rights. A security change in Windows Server 2008 does not let non-administrative users create local printer connections. In the scenarios that are described in the "Symptoms" section, the printers are represented in Windows as local printers and as network printers.

Resolution
