Symptoms

Group Policy attributes for removable media are not applied successfully in Windows Server 2008. These attributes are defined under Removable Storage Access in the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC).

For example, you can play music by using Windows Media Player even if you have enabled the CD and DVD: Deny read access policy in GPMC.

Cause

This problem occurs because the Portable Device Enumerator service is set to Manual.

Note This setting is the default setting in Windows Server 2008.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, start the Portable Device Enumerator service in Windows Server 2008. After you start this service, the Group Policy attributes are applied successfully.
