Error message when you try to upgrade a Windows Server 2003 SP2-based computer to Windows Server 2008: "Setup does not support configuration of or installation to disks connected through a USB or 1394 port"

Symptoms

You try to upgrade a Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer to Windows Server 2008. However, the upgrade process fails, and you receive the following error message:
Setup does not support configuration of or installation to disks connected through a USB or 1394 port.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Windows Server 2003 SP2-based computer uses an iSCSI device as the startup device. Windows Server 2008 does not support an upgrade installation that uses an iSCSI device as the startup device.

Workaround
