Internet Explorer 6 stops responding after you install security update 942615 on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2

Symptoms

On a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 stops responding when you try to a visit a Web site. This problem occurs after you install security update 942615 (MS07-069).

Additionally, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:
Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.

  • If hotfix 942367 is installed, hotfix 942367 is enabled by adding a DWORD value named * that has a value of 1 to the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_PROTECT_DECOMPRESSION_FILTER_FROM_ABORT_KB942367
  • If update 942615 (MS07-069) is installed, the problem is resolved by adding a DWORD value named * that has a value of 1 to the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_PROTECT_DECOMPRESSION_FILTER_FROM_ABORT_KB942367
If other Internet Explorer hotfixes have been previously installed, this registry value enables hotfix 942367. If no Internet Explorer hotfixes are installed on the system, the addition of this registry value causes no functional changes.
