Error message when you try to upgrade Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 when computer has the system volume mirrored as a dynamic volume: "Windows Setup experienced an unexpected error"

Symptoms

When you start a Windows Server 2003-based computer that has the system volume mirrored as a dynamic volume, and then you try to upgrade Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008, you may receive the following error message:
Windows Setup experienced an unexpected error. To install Windows, restart the installation.
Additionally, the following error may be logged in the Setuperr.log file:
Error [0x0601d3] IBS InstallWindows:SetSetupProperties failed.

C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther

Cause

This problem occurs because the Windows Server 2008 installation does not support the system volume as a mirrored dynamic volume.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, break the software mirror before you perform the upgrade to Windows Server 2008. To break the software mirror, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, click Computer Management, and then click Disk Management.
  2. Right-click the system volume from which you are booting, and select Break Mirrored Volume.

    For example, if the system volume is mirrored from Disk0 to Disk1, right-click the system volume on Disk0, and then select Break Mirrored Volume.
  3. Click Yes, and then close Disk Management.
  4. Upgrade Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008.
  5. After the upgrade is complete, use Disk Management to re-establish the software mirror.
