Windows SideShow services and tasks may not start in Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

In Windows Server 2008, Windows SideShow services and tasks may not start. Additionally, the four Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) tasks that are included in Windows SideShow may not run.

Cause

This problem occurs because Windows SideShow services and tasks depend on the Wireless LAN API. By default, the Wireless LAN API is not installed in Windows Server 2008.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, install the Wireless LAN Service component. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Server Manager.
  2. In Server Manager, click Add Features under Features Summary.
  3. In the Add Features Wizard dialog box, make sure that Wireless LAN Service is selected.
  4. Click Next, and then click Install.
  5. After the installation process is complete, click Close, and then close Server Manager.

Although the tasks that manage Windows SideShow may not run, the network drivers and the API layers are not affected. Therefore, the network drivers and the API layers can still send data to the devices.
