How to register Microsoft Filter Pack with SharePoint Portal Server 2003

This article describes how to register Microsoft Filter Pack with Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 so that you can enable additional file types to be indexed by SharePoint Portal Server 2003.

Step 1: Install Microsoft Filter Pack

The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:
Download the Microsoft Filter Pack package now. For more information about how to download Microsoft support files, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

Step 2: Add the file types

After you have installed Microsoft Filter Pack on a computer that is running SharePoint Portal Server 2003, follow these steps to add file types that you want to be indexed:

1. On the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal site, click Site Settings.
2. On the Site Settings page, click Configure search and indexing under Search Settings and Indexed Content.
3. On the "Configure Search and Indexing" page, click Include file types in the General Content Settings and Indexing Status section.
4. For each file name extension that you want to include, follow these steps:
   1. On the "Specify File Types to Include" page, click New File Type.
   2. On the Add File Type page, type the file name extension in the File extension box for the file type that you want to add to the list of file types to be indexed.

   3. Click OK to save your changes.

Note To crawl documents that use the extensions that you added, you must start a full crawl of the content source.
