Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 services that were previously removed are restored after you restore the system state on a Windows Server 2008-based computer

Symptoms

You perform a system state backup on a Windows Server 2008-based computer that is running Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, and then you remove Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. After you perform a system state restore on the computer, you experience one or more of the following issues:
  • The SharePoint services that were removed, such as the SharePoint Timer service and the SharePoint Services Tracing service (SPTrace), are restored. In this case, these services are restored during the Restore process. However, they do not start after you restart the computer. This behavior occurs because the Dependent.dll files have been removed.
  • Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel lists Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 as installed. However, when you click Remove or Change, you cannot remove or change Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. This is because the required executable file is no longer in the file system.
  • The Windows SharePoint Services registry keys are restored, even though Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 is not installed.
  • The Windows SharePoint Services-related Web sites and application pools are restored in Internet Information Services (IIS).
  • If the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) writer in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 was registered before you performed the system state backup, the SharePoint Search index files are restored to the file system.
  • When you try to reinstall Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, the installation fails.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, rerun the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 installer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. From the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 installation source, double-click Setup.exe. When the installation is complete, make sure that you do not start the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  4. Locate Windows SharePoint Services, and then click Remove. Restart the computer if it is required.
  5. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet information Services (IIS) Manager.
  6. Open IIS Manager, expand Web sites, right-click SharePoint Central Administration v3, and then click Delete.
  7. Install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 again by running the Setup.exe program from the Windows SharePoint Services installation source, and then run the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard.
