The query result is corrupted or incomplete when an application uses Microsoft ODBC driver for SQL Server to query a SQL Server database

Symptoms

On a Windows Server 2003-based computer, when an application connects to a Microsoft SQL Server database and then queries data in a column, the query result is corrupted or incomplete. Additionally, you receive one of the following error messages:

Error message 1

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Unknown token received from SQL Server

Error message 2

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Protocol error in TDS stream
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The application uses the Microsoft ODBC driver for SQL Server (Sqlsrv32.dll) to connect to the SQL Server database. For example, the Osql.exe tool is an application that uses the ODBC driver to connect to databases.
  • The table has a column of the text data type.
  • The column has multibyte data collation, such as Japanese collation.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
