Result



When you are trying to install Service pack 2 onto a Windows Server 2003 computer, you receive the following error messages in order:

Service Pack 2 Setup Error
The System cannot find the file specified.

Service Pack 2 Setup Error
Service Pack 2 installation did not complete.

In the svcpack.log file, you can see messages similar to the followings:

179.058: UnRegisterSpuninstForRecovery, failed to delete SpRecoverCmdLine value, error 0x2
179.058: DoInstallation: Failed to unregistering spuninst.exe for recovery.
179.158: The system cannot find the file specified.
225.304: Message displayed to the user: The system cannot find the file specified.
225.304: User Input: OK
225.304: Service Pack 2 installation did not complete.
253.285: Message displayed to the user: Service Pack 2 installation did not complete.
253.285: User Input: OK
253.285: Update.exe extended error code = 0x1ffe0002
253.285: Update.exe return code was masked to 0x643 for MSI custom action compliance.

Cause



This problem may occur when the following registry key is missing.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole]

Resolution



If the key is missing, please find a Windows Server 2003 computer that is freshly installed, and export this key. Import the key to the problematic computer.
