Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are running a Windows Server 2003 R2-based computer.
  • This computer has Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications (SUA) installed.
In this scenario, SUA may return random strings and junk characters when it tries to obtain an ID, such as a group ID or a user ID.

This problem may affect programs that require IDs for authentication. For example, this problem may affect telnet.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
