Error message when you use the InstantiateTemplateRequest method to create an e-mail object for a custom entity in Microsoft Dynamics CRM: "Server was unable to process request"

Symptoms

When you use the InstantiateTemplateRequest method from the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 Software Development Kit (SDK) to create an e-mail object for a custom entity, you receive the following error message:
Server was unable to process request.
Additionally, if you have turned on platform tracing, you receive the following error message:
System.Xml.XmlException: The root element is missing.
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The entity is a custom entity.
  • You use a global e-mail template.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 Update Rollup 3.
