Error message when you try to go offline in the Microsoft Dynamics CRM client for Outlook: "Business Management Error: The user ID associated with the current record is not valid"

Symptoms

When you try to go offline in the Microsoft Dynamics CRM client for Microsoft Office Outlook, you receive the following error message:
Business Management Error: The user ID associated with the current record is not valid
Additionally, no data is brought offline.

Cause

This problem occurs because the ODBC connection on the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 server connects to the wrong instance of Microsoft SQL Server.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0 server.
  2. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Data Sources (ODBC).
  3. In the ODBC Data Sources Administrator dialog box, click the System DSN tab.
  4. Under System Data Sources, click Microsoft CRM, and then click Configure.
  5. In the Server box, confirm that the server is the correct instance of SQL Server for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0.
  6. Click Next two times.
  7. In the Change the default database to box, confirm that the correct database is selected for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0, and then click Next.
  8. Click Finish.
  9. Click Test Data Source.
  10. You may receive the following message. If you receive this message, click OK.
    TESTS COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY!
  11. Click OK.
  12. Click OK to close the ODBC Data Sources Administrator dialog box.
