Error message when you run the �ipconfig /renew� command on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003

Symptoms

When you run the ipconfig /renew command at a command prompt on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, you may receive an error message that resembles one of the following:

Event Msg: The system failed to register host (A or AAAA) resource records (RRs) for network adapter with settings: Adapter Name : {Adaptor GUID} Host Name : name Primary Domain Suffix : domain.com DNS server list : Sent update to server : 172.26.x.y, 172.26.w.z IP Address(es) : 172.26.4.111 The reason the system could not register these RRs during the update request was because of a system problem. You can manually retry DNS registration of the network adapter and its settings by typing "ipconfig /registerdns" at the command prompt. If problems still persist, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator. For specific error code, see the record data displayed below.

Cause

This problem may occur if Windows Deployment Server (WDSERVER) is running on the computer. The Windows Deployment service binds to the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) client port during the startup process. Therefore, the Windows Deployment service cannot set the SO_REUSEADDR socket option.

Resolution

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, add the SharedPorts registry key to the registry. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WDSServer\Parameters
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type SharedPorts, and then press ENTER.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  6. Type 1, and then click OK.
