The ADAM store on a Windows Server 2003 R2-based computer always uses the NTLM protocol instead of the Kerberos protocol to perform user proxy authentication

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. You use user proxy authentication to bind to an Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM) store. This ADAM store resides on a Windows Server 2003 R2-based computer. However, the ADAM store always uses the NTLM protocol for authentication instead of using the Kerberos protocol. This behavior occurs even if the authentication scheme is set to Negotiate. This behavior is a problem if the environment requires the Kerberos protocol for increased security.

Cause

During the user proxy authentication process of ADAM, the LogonUser function is called to perform network logon. However, in Windows Server 2003 and in earlier Windows operating systems, the LogonUser function is hardcoded to use the NTLM protocol for authentication.
