Symptoms

After you install the Scalable Networking Pack (SNP), a Windows Server 2003-based computer may stop responding during shutdown or during hibernation. When this problem occurs, the computer does not respond to the ping command.

Cause

This problem occurs because of a deadlock situation. The deadlock situation is caused by the "TCP Chimney Offload" feature. This feature is part of the Scalable Networking Pack.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

You must have Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 insatalled.

You have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Workaround

To work around this problem, disable the TCP Chimney Offload feature. To do this, run the Netsh int ip set chimney DISABLED command at a command prompt.
