You cannot use Add/Remove Programs on a Windows Server 2003-based computer to uninstall iSCSI Initiator after you install a service pack

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. On a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer, you install Microsoft iSCSI Initiator version 2.04 or an earlier version. Then, you install a Windows Server 2003 service pack. In this scenario, you cannot use the Add/Remove Programs item in Control Panel to uninstall iSCSI Initiator.

Cause

This issue occurs because the iSCSI Initiator installation package is installed as a hotfix. When a service pack is installed, the service pack removes the registry entries that allow for previous hotfix packages to be uninstalled.

Resolution

Use one of the following options, as appropriate for your situation.

Option 1

To avoid this issue, uninstall iSCSI Initiator before you install the service pack. Then, reinstall iSCSI Initiator after the service pack is installed.

Option 2

To resolve this issue after it has already occurred, run the iSCSI Initiator uninstall program. To do this, type the following command at the command prompt, and then press ENTER:
%SYSTEMROOT%\$NtUninstalliscsi200$\spuninst\spuninst.exe
