FIX: A small memory leak may occur, and a decrease in performance may occur on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1

Symptoms

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1), a small memory leak may occur, and a decrease in performance may occur. This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • You install Windows Server 2003 Post-Service Pack 1 COM+ 1.5 Hotfix Rollup Package 10, or you install any other update package that includes Windows Server 2003 Post-Service Pack 1 COM+ 1.5 Hotfix Rollup Package 10.

    Note If the version of the Ole32.dll file is later than 5.2.3790.2736, this problem may occur. To examine the version of the Ole32.dll file, locate the following path:
    %windows%/system 32
  • You create tens of thousands of registered Microsoft COM components, or you destroy tens of thousands of registered COM components.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
