The DAV:getcontenttype property is changed, and a .doc file loses some properties when you use Word 2007 to edit the .doc file on a shared drive M

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. An Exchange Server 2003 public folder store is shared as a file storage folder by using drive M. You use Microsoft Office Word 2007 to remotely edit a Microsoft Office Word (.doc) file on the shared drive M. In this scenario, the .doc file loses some properties, such as the "author" property. Additionally, if you use Microsoft Exchange Explorer to check the properties of the file, you notice that the DAV:getcontenttype property is changed from application/msword to application/octet-stream after the edits are saved.

Note This issue does not occur if you use Microsoft Office Word 2003 to edit the file.

Cause

When you modify a .doc file in Word 2007, Word 2007 first saves the changes to a .tmp file in the same folder together with the file that you are modifying. When you save the file, Word 2007 deletes the original .doc file. Word 2007 also renames the .tmp file to the new .doc file. In this case, the Exchange store determines the content type based on the extension name when the content is created. This judgment cannot be reevaluated even if the file is renamed soon.

Workaround

To work around this issue, restrict users from modifying the files directly on drive M. Users can download the file for editing and then upload the new .doc file to drive M.
