Error message when you try to create a DHCP Service application resource on a Windows Server 2003-based server cluster: "The specified service does not exist as an installed service"

Symptoms

When you use the Cluster Application Wizard to create a DHCP Service application resource on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based server cluster, you receive the following error message:
An error occurred attempting to set properties:

The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

Error ID: 1060 (00000424).
Note To start the Cluster Application Wizard, right-click a group in the Cluster Administrator program, and then click Configure Application.

Cause

This problem occurs if the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server service is not installed on the appropriate cluster nodes. The DHCP Server service must be installed on each cluster node that might host the DHCP Service application resource before you create the DHCP Service application resource.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, install the DHCP Server service on each cluster node that might host the DHCP Service application resource. Then, create the DHCP Service application resource on the server cluster. To install the DHCP Server service, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
  2. In the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  3. In the Components list, click Networking Services.

    Note Do not click to select the Networking Services check box.
  4. Click Details, click to select the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) check box, and then click OK.
  5. Click Next, and then let the Windows Components Wizard install the DHCP Server service.

    Note You may be prompted to insert the Windows Server 2003 CD.
  6. Click Finish to exit the Windows Components Wizard.
