The DHCP Server service may stop responding during the shutdown process on a Windows Server 2003-based computer

Symptoms

On a Windows Server 2003-based computer, the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server service may stop responding during the shutdown process.

After this problem occurs, all the functions that the DHCP Server service provides do not work. Additionally, you cannot restart the DHCP Server service.

Cause

This problem occurs because of a timing issue. After the timing issue occurs, the DHCP Server encounters a deadlock condition. Therefore, the server is unable to handle the request to stop the DHCP Server service.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have one of the following service packs installed on the computer:
  • Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Restart requirement

After you apply this hotfix, you must restart the DHCP Server service.

This hotfix does not replace any other previously released hotfixes.
