Symptoms

When you log on to a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you may receive the following Stop error message:
Stop 0x0000008E (0xc0000005, 0x808bc9dd, 0xf4e6db14, 0x00000000)
Note The four parameters in this error message vary.

Cause

This problem occurs because a program has enumerated the registry subkeys in the backup control set. When the first user logs on to the computer, the system creates a backup copy of the working control set. Then, the system invalidates the pointers to the registry entries in the backup control set. Later, if the system enumerates these registry entries, the "Stop 0x0000008E" error occurs, or incorrect data is returned.

Workaround

To work around this problem, disable or modify the program that enumerates the backup control set.

Note The program can use the CurrentControlSet control set to access the registry entries.
