Symptoms

The Open and the Save As common dialog boxes may display files that do not match the selected file filter on a Microsoft Windows XP-based or on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer. This problem occurs if the selected file filter exceeds 260 characters.

Cause

The common file dialog boxes store the text for the selected file filter in a text buffer. The text buffer is limited to 260 characters. Therefore, when the file filter contains more than 260 characters, the file filter will be truncated to 260 characters.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Workaround

To work around this problem, you have to modify the file filter in the application that calls the GetOpenFileName function or the GetSaveFileName function. Make sure that any file filter that you specified does not exceed 260 characters.
