Hotfix adds new functionality to suppress Plug and Play-related UI messages in Windows Server 2003 or in Windows XP

View products that this article applies to.

Summary

This article describes a hotfix that you can apply to add a new registry entry in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or in Windows XP. This registry entry lets you suppress user interface (UI) messages that are related to Plug and Play in Windows Server 2003 or in Windows XP. For example, you can suppress messages such as the following:
Found New Hardware
You might want to use this feature in the following scenario:
  • You connect a device to a Windows Server 2003-based computer or to a Windows XP-based computer.
  • You start a software installation for the device.

For example, you insert a disc, and then the Auto-Run feature starts the installation of the device drivers.
In this scenario, a conflict may occur that prevents the device from being installed correctly. For example, the Driver Package Installer (DPInst) may stop responding because the New Hardware Found Wizard starts at the same time.

More information

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

After you install this hotfix, you must edit the registry to configure the setting to suppress messages. Two registry values are increased in this hotfix. "SuppressUI" is only for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP 64-bit versions. "SuppressNewHWUI" is for Windows XP 32-bit versions.

To fix the issue in Windows Server 2003 or in Windows XP 64-bit versions, add a DWORD value that is named "SuppressUI" to the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PlugPlay\Parameters
To configure this registry setting, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following subkey in the registry, and then click it:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\PlugPlay\Parameters
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type SuppressUI for the name of the DWORD entry, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click SuppressUI, and then click Modify.
  6. Do one of the following:
    • To suppress messages, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
    • To stop suppressing messages, type 0 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Note The setting does not take effect until the computer is restarted.
To fix the issue in Windows XP 32-bit versions, add a DWORD value that is named "SuppressNewHWUI" to the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceInstall\Settings
To configure this registry setting, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following subkey in the registry, and then click it:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DeviceInstall\Settings
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type SuppressNewHWUI for the name of the DWORD entry, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click SuppressNewHWUI, and then click Modify.

Note We recommend that you use this method only as a temporary resolution for a specific problem. For example, after you enable the registry setting to suppress messages, we recommend that you disable the setting after it is no longer required. Otherwise, you will no longer receive any UI messages that are related to Plug and Play.

Technical support for x64-based versions of Microsoft Windows

If your hardware came with a Microsoft Windows x64 edition already installed, your hardware manufacturer provides technical support and assistance for the Windows x64 edition. In this case, your hardware manufacturer provides support because a Windows x64 edition was included with your hardware. Your hardware manufacturer might have customized the Windows x64 edition installation by using unique components. Unique components might include specific device drivers or might include optional settings to maximize the performance of the hardware. Microsoft will provide reasonable-effort assistance if you need technical help with a Windows x64 edition. However, you might have to contact your manufacturer directly. Your manufacturer is best qualified to support the software that your manufacturer installed on the hardware. If you purchased a Windows x64 edition such as a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 edition separately, contact Microsoft for technical support.
