Introduction

After you upgrade Microsoft Windows 2000 Server to Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you must also upgrade the certification authority (CA).

After the upgrade to Windows Server 2003 is complete, follow these steps to upgrade the certification authority:
  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Certification Authority.
  2. When you receive the following message, click Yes:
    The Certification Authority registration and security setting in Active Directory must be upgraded from the Windows 2000 format to prevent tampering by unauthorized individuals. This will not cause interoperability issues with clients and should be done as soon as possible. If you do not choose to upgrade the settings now, you will be prompted again the next time you open the management console. You can upgrade these settings now. Do you want to proceed?
  3. When you receive the following message, click Yes:
    You must restart Certificate Services for the changes to take effect. Do you want to restart the service now?
  4. Right-click Certificate Template, and then click Manage.
  5. When you receive the following message, click Yes:
    Windows has detected that new certificate templates should be installed. Do you want to install them?
  6. When you receive the following message, click Yes:
    Windows successfully installed the new Certificate templates.
