Error message when you synchronize a Windows Mobile device with Microsoft Exchange 2003: "Active Sync encountered a problem on the server. Support code: 0x86000108"

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 delivers an alert message to a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 mailbox, the alert message can be synchronized to a Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0, Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.0, or Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 based-device. However, you cannot use the Windows Mobile based-device to synchronize any messages that are received after the alert message. If you use the Windows Mobile based-device to manually force synchronization, you receive the following error message at the bottom of the screen:
Error: "Active Sync encountered a problem on the server" Support code: 0x86000108
If you delete the alert message or move it to another folder that is not synchronized with the Windows Mobile based-device, you can synchronize the other messages in the folder.

Cause

Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 changes the alert message from the IPM.Note type to the IPM.Sharing type. Additionally, Exchange ActiveSync does not support the IPM.Sharing message type. Therefore, the Windows Mobile based-device cannot synchronize the alert message from Microsoft Exchange 2003.
