Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use a mail server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.
  • You install an S/MIME control on a client computer that is running Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access 2003.
  • You input the following recipient address to try to send a fax message by using Outlook Web Access 2003:
    FAX:xxxx
Note In this example, xxxx is a placeholder for the fax number.

Cause

This problem occurs because the recipient address cannot be accepted as a valid address. Therefore, the fax message cannot be sent.

Workaround

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Have the administrator create contact objects for any fax address.
  • Uninstall the S/MIME control from the Outlook Web Access 2003 clients.
  • Use a specific encapsulation scheme to encapsulate the address in SMTP format.

For example, a fax gateway is installed on an Exchange Server computer. This computer uses the "FAX" type for addresses, and it uses the "contoso.com" routing domain. The address is a 4-digit fax number.

In this example, the encapsulated address appears as follows:
    IMCEAFAX-1234@contoso.com
