You experience this problem when you try to install Exchange Server 2003 in an Active Directory directory service forest that has been prepared for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.

Cause

This problem occurs because a pure Exchange Server 2007 environment does not support the installation of Exchange Server 2003.

More information

The Exchange Server 2007 Setup program prepares the Active Directory schema for the installation of Exchange Server 2007. However, the Setup program does not create the CN=Active Directory Connections container in the CN=Microsoft Exchange container in Active Directory.

When you run the Exchange Server 2003 Setup program on a computer that is in a pure Exchange Server 2007 environment, the Setup program does not run the /forestprep command. This behavior occurs because the Exchange Server 2003 Setup program detects that the Active Directory schema has already been extended. However, because the CN=Active Directory Connections container does not exist in Active Directory, the installation of Exchange Server 2003 is unsuccessful.

Important We recommend that you do not run the Exchange Server 2003 Setup /forestprep command in a pure Exchange Server 2007 environment. Although this command appears to successfully create the CN=Active Directory Connections container, the installation of Exchange Server 2003 is still unsuccessful. In this scenario, you receive the following error message when you try to install Exchange Server 2003:
Setup detects that your Active Directory schema has not been extended for use by Exchange 2003. Some Exchange System Manager functionality will not be available until Setup is run with the /ForestPrep switch.
