FIX: A socket file is shown as an FIFO file on a Windows Server 2003 R2-based computer that is running Microsoft Services for NFS

You have a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2-based computer that is running Microsoft Services for Network File System (NFS). When you create a socket file on a NFS share that this computer exports, the file appears to be created successfully as expected. However, when you run the file command to display the file type, the file is shown as a first-in, first-out (FIFO) file. That is, the file is shown as a named pipe file. The file is not shown as a socket file.

This problem occurs because Microsoft Services for NFS does not write a byte to the file that you create to make sure that the file size is set correctly. Therefore, the file type is reported incorrectly.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
