Halo 2 for Windows Vista: Minimum System Requirements

This article describes the minimum system requirements for Microsoft Halo 2 for Windows Vista. This article also describes an error message that you receive if the hardware does not pass a system check.

To determine whether your computer meets the minimum system requirements, use the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (Dxdiag.exe). To start the DirectX Diagnostic Tool in Windows Vista, follow these steps:
  1. Click StartStart button , type dxdiag in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
    User Account Control permission If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
  2. Note the values for Processor and for Memory.
  3. Click the Display tab.
  4. Under Device, note the values for Name and for Approx. Total Memory of the video card.
Halo 2 for Windows Vista requires a personal computer that meets the following minimum requirements.
Component Minimum system requirement
Operating system Windows 7 or Windows Vista
Computer processor 2.0 gigahertz (GHz)
Memory 1 gigabyte (GB) or random access memory (RAM)
Hard disk space 7 GB of available hard disk space. The dedicated server and the map editor require more hard disk space.
Video card ATI X700 or Nvidia 6100 display adapter with 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM and the following features:
  • Pixel shader: 2 or greater
  • Vertex shader: 2 or greater
Windows Experience Index scores:
  • Graphics score: 3 or greater
  • Gaming graphic score: 3 or greater
DVD drive 32x speed
SoundSound card, speakers, or headset
Supported controlsKeyboard and mouse or compatible game controller (Xbox 360 Controller for Windows)
Internet connection for online playNetwork adapter for LAN multiplayer gameplay
Broadband Internet access for Windows Live multiplayer gameplay

Unsupported hardware


The hardware must pass a system check when you run the Setup program or when you run the game. If the hardware does not pass the system check, you receive one of the following error messages:
Error message 1
Halo 2 for Windows Vista has one or more compatibility issues on this computer:
The graphics hardware on this computer is not supported for use with Halo 2 for Windows Vista.
Error message 2
Halo 2 for Windows Vista has one or more compatibility issues on this computer:
The processor speed on this computer is too low to run Halo 2 for Windows Vista.

Windows Experience Index



Halo 2 for Windows Vista is designed for computers that run Windows Vista with an overall Windows Experience Index score of 3 or greater. We recommend a Windows Experience Index score of 5.

To start the Performance Information and Tools utility in Windows Vista, follow these steps:
  1. Click StartStart button , type performance information and tools in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
  2. Click Performance Information and Tools in the Programs list to view the Windows Experience Index score.


For more information about the Windows Experience Index, follow these steps:
  1. Click StartStart button , and then click Help and Support.
  2. In the Search box, type Windows Experience, and then press ENTER.
  3. Click What is the Windows Experience Index.

Operating system



The game requires Windows Vista. If Windows 7 or Windows Vista is not installed on the computer, you receive one of the following error messages:
This program requires Microsoft Windows Vista or Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
The process entry point CreatePorcessWithTokenW could not be located in the dynamic link library ADVAPI32.dll.
Note Halo 2 for Windows Vista will not run on a Windows Server 2003-based computer. However, Halo 2 dedicated servers will run on a Windows Server 2003-based computer.
