Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You view the audit trail for account logons in Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
  • You see that event ID 680 has been generated.
However, a random extra character appears at the end of the Source Workstation field in event ID 680. If you try to remotely monitor the Source Workstation field to obtain the workstation information, the attempt is unsuccessful.

The following is an example of event ID 680:

Event Type: Failure Audit
Event Source: Security
Event Category: Account Logon
Event ID: 680
Date: <Date>
Time: <Time>
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: <ComputerName>
Description:
Logon attempt by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0
Logon account: <Account>
Source Workstation: Computer1?
Error Code: 0xC000006A

Note In this example, the Source Workstation field contains an unexpected "?" character. The actual workstation name consists of a "Computer1" string.
