The configuration process takes a long time when you start Access 2007 after you run an earlier version of Access on the same computer

Symptoms

On a computer that has multiple versions of Microsoft Office Access installed, Microsoft Windows Installer may start when you start Microsoft Office Access 2003, Microsoft Office Access 2007 or Microsoft Office Access 2007 Runtime. The configuration process takes a long time when you start Access 2007 after you run an earlier version of Access on the same computer.

Cause

The Windows Installer repair operation registers Access 2003 every time that you start Access 2003 after you use Access 2007. Similarly, the Windows Installer repair operation registers Access 2007 every time that you start Access 2007 after you use an earlier version of Access. Access 2000 and Access 2002 do not initiate a repair operation after you use a later version of Access. If the version of Access that you start is the same as the version of Access that you previously used, the Windows Installer repair operation does not occur.

More Information

The 2007 Office system uses a new setup technology. Binary files and international resource files are separated into components so that you can install each file independently. In earlier versions of Office, all multilingual installations require that you to apply a Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) to the English version of Office. The new setup technology in the 2007 Office system lets you deploy multiple languages without first installing the English version of Office. You can also augment a 2007 Office system installation in any language by adding support for other languages. Additionally, this setup technology lets you upgrade a 2007 Office system installation by incrementally adding support for new products and for new features.

This new setup technology breaks up installable components of the 2007 Office system into separate .msi files. When you repair an installation of the 2007 Office system, Office verifies that the following conditions are true for every component in the installation:
  • The component is installed correctly.
  • The component is registered in the Windows registry.
Because the new setup technology uses separate .msi files, the installation process and the repair process are slower in the 2007 Office system. However, this technology lets you make iterative changes to an existing installation of the 2007 Office system. Additionally, instead of installing a single .msi file for each product in the 2007 Office system, you must now load and process multiple .msi files. The extra files and the extra settings that must be installed increase the installation time. However, this additional installation time is also caused by loading and starting every .msi file.

You can install more than one version of Office on a single computer. For example, you can install both the 2007 Office system and Office 2003 on the same computer. However, we do not recommend this.

Note Microsoft does not support using multiple versions of Office on versions of Microsoft Windows that have Terminal Services enabled. If you want to run multiple versions of Office, disable Terminal Services.
