A Windows Server 2003-based DHCP server sends DNS update requests even though you have disabled DNS dynamic updates on the DHCP server

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

On a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based DHCP server, you have disabled DNS dynamic updates. However, the DHCP server continues to send DNS update requests.

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • You have defined DHCP reservations in a scope on the DHCP server.
  • You have disabled DNS dynamic updates in the DHCP server properties or in the DHCP scope properties.
  • An IP address that is defined in the DHCP reservations is released.
This problem does not prevent DHCP clients from obtaining TCP/IP configurations from the DHCP server. However, many unnecessary DNS update entries are added to the DHCP server log. Therefore, it may be difficult for administrators to troubleshoot DHCP-related problems by using information in the DHCP server log. Additionally, this problem generates unnecessary network traffic.

Note This problem does not occur if the reservations are not defined.

Cause

This problem occurs because the DHCP Server service incorrectly sends DNS update requests when the DHCP Server service releases IP addresses in the DHCP reservations. The DHCP Server service does not check the DNS settings before it sends DNS update requests.
