A Windows Server 2003-based computer takes longer to start than expected after you apply the 916048 hotfix

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • A Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer uses the Microsoft Storport storage driver to access external disk drives.
  • The 916048 hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article is applied:
    916048� You experience problems when you use the Microsoft Storport storage driver for host bus adapter removable storage on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003
  • After you apply the 916048 hotfix, you restart the computer or you shut down the computer.
In this scenario, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • The computer takes longer to start than expected.
  • The computer cannot start if one of the external disk drives is used as a boot device.
  • The target cluster node takes longer than expected to bring the shared resources online if the computer is a cluster node.

Cause

This problem occurs because the system incorrectly sends a START STOP UNIT command to the external disk drives during the shutdown process.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, apply the 932755 hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
932755� An updated Storport storage driver (version 5.2.3790.4021) is available for Windows Server 2003
