Symptoms

Every time that you restart a server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, the metabase is updated to have an SMTP domain that was deleted earlier.

Cause

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • A Mailbox Manager Settings recipient policy exists.
  • The E-mail Addresses property page has been enabled for this policy
  • The following check box is selected on the E-Mail Addresses (Policy) tab of this policy:
This Exchange Organization is responsible for all mail delivery to this address
If this check box is selected, the Exchange organization is authoritative for the SMTP domains that are specified on the E-Mail Addresses (Policy) tab. Therefore, the SMTP domain remains in the metabase.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, configure Exchange to no longer be authoritative for the particular SMTP domain. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Exchange System Manager.
  2. Expand Recipients, and then click Recipient Policies.
  3. In the details pane, right-click the Mailbox Manager Settings policy, and then click Change property pages.
  4. Click to select the E-Mail Addresses check box if this check box is not already selected, and then click OK.
  5. Right-click the Mailbox Manager Settings policy, and then click Properties.
  6. Click the E-mail Addresses (Policy) tab, and then click the SMTP domain with which you experience the problem.
  7. Click Edit, and then click to clear the This Exchange Organization is responsible for all mail delivery to this address check box.

Note You can also remove this SMTP domain.
  8. Click OK two times.
  9. Right-click the Mailbox Manager Settings policy, and then click Apply this policy now.

Note You may want to wait for a period of low network activity before you apply the Mailbox Manager Settings policy in the organization.
  10. Click Yes to update all the recipients by using the settings in the Mailbox Manager Settings policy.
