How to open Word 2007 files or Excel 2007 files in Microsoft Works

This article discusses how to open Microsoft Office Word 2007 files and Microsoft Office Excel 2007 files in Microsoft Works.

Note Before you open Word 2007 files and Excel 2007 files in Works, install the Office Compatibility Pack. For more information about the Office Compatibility Pack, visit the following Microsoft Web site:The Word 2007 file can have one of the following file name extensions:

• .doc
• .docx
• .docm

To open a Word 2007 file in Microsoft Works Word Processor, use one of the following methods:

• Use the Open command on the File menu in Works Word Processor. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click Open.
  2. In the Open dialog box, locate the Word 2007 file that you want to open.
  3. Click Open.
• Use the Open with command. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the Word 2007 file that you want to open, point to Open with, and then click Choose program.
  2. In the Open With dialog box, click Browse.
  3. Locate the Microsoft Works folder, double-click WKSWP.EXE, and then click OK.
• Double-click the Word 2007 file.
  
  Note Before you can open Word 2007 files in Works Word Processor, you have to associate the Word 2007 file types with Works Word Processor. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the Word 2007 file that you want to open in Works Word Processor, point to Open with, and then click Choose program.
  2. In the Open With dialog box, click Browse.
  3. Locate the Microsoft Works folder, double-click WKSWP.EXE, click to select the Always use this program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.

The Excel 2007 file can have one of the following file name extensions:

• .xls
• .xlsx
• .xlsm
• .xlsb

To open an Excel 2007 file in Microsoft Works Spreadsheet, use one of the following methods:

• Use the Open with command. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the file that you want to open in Works Spreadsheet, point to Open with, and then click Choose program.
  2. In the Open With dialog box, click Browse.
  3. Locate the Microsoft Works folder, double-click WKSSS.EXE, and then click OK two times.
• Double-click the Excel 2007 file.
  
  Note Before you can open Excel 2007 files in Works Spreadsheet, you have to associate the Excel 2007 file types with Works Spreadsheet. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the Excel 2007 file that you want to open in Works Spreadsheet, point to Open with, and then click Choose program.
  2. In the Open With dialog box, click the Always use this program to open this kind of file check box, and then click Browse.
  3. Locate the Microsoft Works folder, double-click WKSSS.EXE, and then click OK.
