The DNS Server service returns a status of SERVFAIL when you use the DNS server plug-in interface to submit a CNAME query to a Windows Server 2003-based DNS server

Symptoms

When you use the Domain Name System (DNS) server plug-in interface to submit a CNAME query to a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based DNS server, the DNS Server service returns a status of SERVFAIL.

If no CNAME record exists, the DNS server plug-in interface should return a status of DNS_PLUGIN_NO_RECORDS. You expect the DNS Server service to handle an empty CNAME response correctly.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, apply the hotfix that is mentioned in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
932704� The DNS server may crash when you use the DNS server plug-in interface to submit many ANY queries to a Windows Server 2003-based DNS server
